Brief History of Blanco, Texas
Blanco, Texas is located in the heart of the Texas Hill Country. The town was founded in 1856 by German immigrants and was originally known as Walnut Creek. The name was changed to Blanco in 1858 in honor of General Mariano Blanco, who fought for Mexican independence.
The town grew quickly thanks to its location on the Chisholm Trail, and by the late 1800s Blanco had become a prosperous trading center. The town’s economy declined in the early 1900s, however, when the railroad bypassed Blanco and moved its operations to nearby Johnson City.
Blanco began to thrive again in the 1940s when Highway 281 was constructed, which brought tourists and new businesses to the town. Today, Blanco is a popular tourist destination and is home to a variety of shops and restaurants.
